As you may have heard, the Compact Flash Association has announced a new memory card for professional cameras, the XQD card. This is not the first time that CFA tries to introduce a new standard; it announced the CFast card a few years ago, but that card never materialized. No cards were actually introduced and no camera supported it, so it probably became a chicken and egg problem. The chances of the XQD card are much better, because one camera already supports it: the Nikon D4, announced today. It doesn’t mean that CompactFlash developments will stop however, at least not yet. Lexar just announced a 1000x (150 MB/sec) card, available in sizes up to 128 GB. CompactFlash is not dead yet!
