Spreading rumors about new cameras or lenses is the favorite pastime of many people. There are even websites dedicated to it, such as ‘canonrumors.com’ and ‘nikonrumors.com’. Maybe some should rename their URL to ‘ridiculousrumors.com’, because these people don’t even understand the very basics of digital cameras. The following specifications were posted on the Canon Rumors website recently, concerning a new top-of-the-line professional camera (Canon EOS 1Ds Mark IV or Canon EOS 1D Mark V, they didn’t know what to call it):

Image sizes: 32.4 mp, 16.2 mp, 8.1 mp @ 5, 3 fps
APS-H mode (1.3x) – 24.9 mp, 12.5 mp, 6.2 mp @ 8, 3 fps
APS-C mode (1.6x) – 20.3 mp, 10.1 mp, 5.1 mp @ 10, 3 fps

Unfortunately, cropping a sensor 1.3x does not give you a pixel count of 1/1.3 as these people thought. The pixel count should be divided by 1.69 (1.3 x 1.3) because you crop both sides (length and width) of the sensor. A 32.4 mp full frame sensor with a APS-H mode would thus give a 19.17 mp result, not a 24.9 mp result. An APS-C mode would give 12.66 mp, not 20.3 mp. They’ve seen the light in the meantime, but it still shows the ridiculousness of these kind of sites. They don’t know anything and publish everything.
