In a few days Photokina 2016 will open its doors, and around 200,000 visitors will once again have a look at the latest innovations in the area of photo and video. Photokina has always been a show about ‘real’ photography, even though photo and video by using a smartphone has found its place on the show as well. This year the show takes one step further, and will also feature cameras in smart devices like your robot vacuum cleaner or refrigirator. The question is if Photokina is not shooting itself in the foot this way. The show has always been not about cameras, but about what you can do with cameras. That philosophy is now abandoned it seems, just to attract more exhibitors (and visitors). The risk is that the loyal traditional exhibitors and visitors will no longer feel this is ‘their’ show and drop out sooner or later.
