Sigma has announced two 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lenses. The ‘Contemporary’ lens is a direct competitor to the Tamron lens with the same zoom range. It will probably cost more or less the same too, although price and availability is not yet known. The ‘Sports’ version is a more professional lens, fully splash and dust proof. It should also be better optically, because it has more lens elements and groups. For me as a wildlife photographer this lens looks promising, even though it won’t replace my Canon 500mm f/4.0 lens. The Canon lens is my main lens when I’m shooting in Africa, but if I go to the USA for landscape photography, I don’t take it with me. Because I may encounter bears, wolves or bisons (for example when shooting in Yellowstone), I do carry a 300mm f/2.8 with 1.4x and 2.0x extenders. The Sigma lens might be a more flexible alternative for that. I’m looking forward to doing a field test soon.
