Zoom lenses are more and more the standard, also in wildlife photography. The new Canon 200-400mm lens with built-in 1.4x extender and the Sigma 2.8/120-300mm lens are wildlife photographers dream lenses. I considered the new Canon lens too, but so far I have resisted the temptation. A prime lens, in my case the Canon 4.0/500mm, has one major advantage: it often forces you to be creative. A zoom lens tempts the user to take the easy way out. You just zoom back a little, to keep the entire animal in the frame. That often is the most obvious, but also the most boring solution however. If you can’t zoom out, you are forced to think about a more creative approach. And that can be a major benefit.
