One of the reasons why mobile phones are more and more replacing compact cameras, is that mobile phones are constantly connected. Compact cameras still offer better image quality, optical zoom and better flash, but people want to upload their pictures to Facebook right here and now, not when they get home and have access to their computer. Samsung tackled this problem by introducing the Galaxy Camera, a compact camera that runs on the Android mobile operation system and has a SIM slot. A clever solution, but also one with a problem: you need to buy a separate (data only) SIM card for your camera with a separate data plan.

Canon just announced the PowerShot N, with a different and more promising approach. The PowerShot N has a so called ‘Mobile Device Connect’ button, which sets up an at hoc network between your mobile phone and this camera. A very clever idea! You can upload pictures to Facebook or any other place on the net, by simply using your mobile phone and the data plan you’ve already got with that phone. I’m sure we will see this button on more future Canon cameras, probably even on future Canon DSLR models.
