Canon has released a firmware update for the EOS-1D X, which corrects two problems which were discussed widely by users of this otherwise excellent camera. The first problem was that the EOS-1D X would not autofocus with lens/extender combinations with an aperture smaller than f/5.6, such as the 500mm F4.0 lens with a 2x Extender. For wildlife photographers like me that was a serious limitation, because I do use that combination from time to time, especially for small birds. The second problem was that if you use the EOS-1D X in servo autofocus, the camera shows the autofocus points in the viewfinder in black. That’s fine during daylight, but in dark situations it means you cannot see very well what the camera is doing. Now you can set the point to pulse in red light, either all the time or only when it gets dark.
