After the megapixel race (which isn’t over yet anyway), we are also seeing a race for the highest ISO-value. And if that’s not enough, a third race is emerging for the longest zoom range. The record is now at 30x zoom if I’m not mistaken, where the focal length is going past 800mm (35mm equivalent). Features like that seem to be for window shopping only, because I don’t see how anyone could really need a compact camera with such an extreme zoom range. Apart from the fact that this lens won’t have great optical quality, you won’t be able to hold still the camera enough, even with image stabilization enabled.
